Below is our nonpartisan proposal for Ranked Choice Voting and a Single Unified November Election, which has already garnered the support of several Neighborhood Associations and Common Council members. You can see the full formal petition, with charter amendment on page 2, HERE.

• This system would be used for all city of Albany elections.
• City elections would be combined into a single unified election, to be held on Election Day in November. All qualified candidates would participate in the same election (instead of the current system with separate primary and general elections).
• The election would use ranked choice voting. This means voters could "rank" their preferred candidates (first choice, second choice, third choice, etc). If no candidate received more than 50% of the vote in the first round, the lowest candidate would be eliminated, and those voters' votes would be moved to their second choice. Votes would be instantly counted again, and the process repeated, until a candidate passes 50%.
• Voters could rank up to five candidates.
• Anyone running for office could collect signatures from any registered city voters, no matter their political party. All candidates would need the same number of signatures.
• Each candidate's name would appear only once each on the ballot ("aggregated fusion voting"). The ballot would list each candidate's political party/parties.
